Planet 21 First Anniversary in Bali : Kids Can!

Accor, the leading international hotel operator in Asia-Pacific and Indonesia, is planting more than 3,000 trees across the archipelago to mark the first anniversary of PLANET 21, the Group’s comprehensive sustainable development program. The tree planting exercise highlights Plant for the Planet, Accor’s innovative towel reuse and reforestation program, which has financed over 3 million trees worldwide (including 100,000 in Indonesia) since 2008.
Indonesia is one of the pioneers of the Plant for the Planet program, with Accor collaborating with Perhutani (the State Forest Company) on a Forest Management Program since 2007. By end of 2011, Accor had reforested more than 78 hectares of land in Gelandang, Central Java, planted more than 100,000 trees and provided land access to more than 150 local farmers there. In 2012, Accor successfully planted more than 10,000 trees across Indonesia including distributing small trees to visitors of Bajra Sandhi square (Renon), downtown Denpasar, Bali, as an effort to communicate environment awareness to the public.

Accor hotels in Bali involve in PLANET 21 sustainability spirit
In Bali, Accor hotels focus on two pillars of PLANET 21, which are Nature and Local especially the waste recycling and children protection. Therefore, on Sunday, 21 April, in order to educate Indonesian children about this program, Accor Bali hotels, including Novotel Bali Nusa Dua, invited more than 70 children from Accor children’s staff and Seminyak elementary school.
After a short presentation of PLANET 21 concept, the children have been divided into small groups to enjoy educational games such as sorting waste, song & dances and finally creativity activities which consisted on designing new items from plastic bottles, cans, cardboards. The team winner received a complete school stationary for each of them.

Mr. Alessandro, the General Manager of the Royal Beach Seminyak Bali explains:
“All Accor hotels in Bali are very committed to set a good example regarding sustainability; therefore, we happily hosted this great initiative. Nowadays it is a must to be aware about environment issues and it’s our responsibility to educate and involve the new generation since early age for a best future.“

The three competing teams, Flight Center, Stella, and House of Travel stayed in our resort for one night, before they continue to run another unique challenges all over the island, designed by the Great Race Bali Air New Zealand.

The teams enjoyed the special barbeque dinner served at 2.28 Beach Club of Novotel Bali Nusa Dua Hotel and Residences. Also were very much impressed by the incredible performance by contemporary Balinese fire dance, during the dinner.

Novotel Bali Nusa Dua is Tsunami Ready certified

On Friday 21.07.2012 at 3:10 pm the sirens went off at Novotel Bali Nusa Dua. A voice announcement followed- calling for a full tsunami test evacuation. Within 12 minutes the hotel as well as beach club were shut down and all staff as well as participating guests were assembled among the hotel five emergency shelters where well prepared emergency teams took over.

Guests and staff were counted and marked with red stickers. First aid kits, sufficient food and water for at least three days as well as sanitary items and sturdy communications equipment are stored at each shelter.

The Novotel vast property is well marked with tsunami evacuation route signs, comprehensive tsunami evacuation information as well as maps are available in every room.

The evacuation of the Kids Club put a smile on many faces. To avoid panic and to turn the unusual situation into a game the Kids Club Team produced a rope that all kids had to grab. As a snake like dragon firmly holding on to the rope 16 kids including staff rushed their way to the emergency shelters on the top floors of one of the Novotel’s towers.

The Novotel received 10 out of 10 points for their preparation and state of readiness.

The evacuation was the final step on the hotels journey towards full tsunami ready certified status.

General Manager Thierry Gasnier: “This was a team effort. We have been preparing since January 2012. The familiarization of the program to the employees was crucial. It gave them a great sense of responsibility, they gave an unconditional support and commitment towards guests safety and security. This certification is the achievement of a great teamwork. We now need to maintain our readiness by exercising drills three to four times a year.”
